Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome refers to symptoms of eye irritation or fatigue, difficulty focusing, frequent loss of place, poor comprehension, or other symptoms of discomfort and inefficiency resulting from spending long periods of time o the computer. Proper history requires a detailed description of the work environment. Distance and direction to the screen, position of glare sources, posture at the desk, and lighting are all included. How much paperwork is related to the time spent on the computer? Are you in a cubicle or a large room?

Examination begins with a comprehensive eye exam. Eye health and its relation to overall medical health is evaluated. Ocular surface evaluation and an assessment of the condition of the eyelids are important cmponents. Careful refraction, and testing of binocular coordination and focusing skills must be related to the computer distance.

Treatment might include some of the following factors:

• Eyeglasses designed specifically for occupational use.

• Attention to any dry eye and/or eyelid conditions which may affect the ocular surface.

• Rearrangement of the work station or environment to address issues of posture and ergonomics.
